IN CHARACTER
PHYSICAL AFFECTION: He would be deeply confused by this if it's anyone he doesn't trust. Mixed feelings on it./Please confuse the fuck out of him.
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: He's familiar with it. Don't give him reason to retaliate./I love a good fight scene, but he's very used to being party to a fight for one's life and the horror of survival. That said, it's not usually his body, so more than a fair chance.
RELATIONSHIPS:He's on-again, off-again married to Arthur He has one person he cares about and walls of mistrust, but platonic friendships are open if you can get in there because... honestly, he's far from against it.
PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: John is a fragment of a Great Old One. I highly recommend not trying to psychic or psionic info-gather at him because you will suffer for it (lose 1 SAN—no, but feel free to play with that kind of result if you want!). For those who aren't psychic/psionic, he's unsettling. Uncanny in a way that feels Wrong, but it settles like an itch rather than having any serious repercussions. He feels like a fragment of a greater power/something touched by power, for those with a sense for that.
MAGICAL INFORMATION: John can touch a corpse and "watch" its last moments, up to the time of death, as long as there is flesh (apparently a braid of human leather works, too); sensitive to the presence of other eldritch entities; if he has possession of a human vessel, he can claim ownership of acting body parts during a bout of madness or other extreme emotional distress. In intense situations, John's voice can distort reality around it in a way that might test resilience a wee bit in the standard Lovecraftian fashion. He can't be driven mad: he stays painfully aware even when any human would have lost themself, because he knows madness on a fundamental level.
MEDICAL INFORMATION: Nonhuman entity; John's anatomy is alien/eldritch and difficult to perceive as a result. His lower half from the pelvis equivalent and down is comprised of layers of tentacle-like appendages, as the most noteworthy trait. It's actually difficult to tell what's fabric, what's body, how many limbs, whether or not something is shadow or smoke or limb or...?? Don't worry about his face behind the mask.
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: Being compared to the King in Yellow/Hastur is a quick way to anger him (in the sense of them being worse than he is); eye-gouging; being complete dark.

OUT OF CHARACTER
BACKTAGGING: Yyyyyessss, I can be slow so backtagging is always allowed.
THREADHOPPING: discussion first, please!
FOURTHWALLING: no, thank you; not unless it legitimately makes sense to do, and even then: please ask first. I don't mind jokes in the narrative, though.
NOT INTERESTED IN: Shipping, generally speaking. Exceptions can be made for canonmates (John's got an Arthur-shaped hole in his heart whether platonic or not, okay?) or KIY/expanded mythos-related; I can be swayed if there's development in general and it looks like it could head that way.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
VISUAL
He looks nearly human (from the waist up, at least) if quite tall at roughly 7', draped in layers on layers of yellow-gold robes and panels with heavy, wide sleeves. The robing is tattered at the edges, as if it were once much longer, leaving spidery tendrils of fabric behind. The shadows cast by his hood, mantle, and the tattered ends of his robes all stretch a little too long, or hint at something unseen. The tattered and frayed ends of his robe reach out like tendrils and seem to move with a constant wind or as though they're alive in their own way. What's visible of skin is black enough to have difficulty distinguishing against itself, and his hands and forearms are mostly wrapped in layers of that same material as his robes, if somewhat imperfectly. Something in the eyes of his pallid mask, full-face but barely sculpted beyond the brow and eye-slits, seems to shift with his emotions, widening and narrowing even as they don't appear to change at all—it's a mask after all, but... Something isn't quite right. How many limbs are there within the sleeves and beneath the golden yellow layers? What is his face behind the mask? ...Is there one?AURAL
John's voice is a resonant baritone; his short temper means it's often growling or gruff. Additionally, the more in tune he is with Hastur, it seems, the lower his voice drops. Typically, it's very soothing to listen to, whether lower or higher in his range, with a theatrical flow and attention to emphasis that gives it colour and presence. Perfect narrator and stage-play actor voice. It's somewhat altered by the presence of his mask, but there's also a strange... echo, perhaps, to it.OLFACTORY
So faint you might miss it, but the scent of old books and incense seem to linger around him, as well as something difficult to place (and better not to dwell on).DEMEANOUR
When not in Situations(tm), John is fairly even-tempered, almost regal. But as he is Often and Usually in Situations(tm), he's more likely to be read as gruff and standoffish. As he's more on the emotional-reactive side, he can get sharp or grouchy quickly, even lashing out. Default status is absolutely "curmudgeon".OPT-OUT
If you have concerns interacting with John Doe/the Entity, or are concerned with how abilities/sensitivities/etc. might interact, please feel free to reach out to me or request to opt-out. If there are threads you'd prefer to avoid on principle, this is also welcome. He's... /gestures, Yeah.
